The world of automotives is changing and changing fast and both businesses and personal users are having to adapt to the changes. Hybrid electric vehicle technicians are on the rise and there are more electric vehicles on the road than ever before. We thought we’d take a look at some models that are highly ranked and seem to be maintaining their edge.  What’s their angle?  How do they compare?  Let’s take a look.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford’s first all-electric SUV has been something of a surprise. They gave it the Mustang moniker and put the iconic Pony right on the front where the grille would be in a regular ride.

On its introduction, the pundits wrote that it is one of the first electric SUVs to truly rival Tesla.  It has the right combination of power, capability, range, and a spacious, posh interior. Quick acceleration makes you forget that this is an electric ride.

The vehicle is as swift as it is silent. With 266 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, you can see the influence of the original Mustang. With the introduction of the new Ford F150 Lightning, you can see how Ford trucks have influenced this electric SUV.  The engineers weren’t satisfied with anything less than ample power.  The driving range is just over 300 miles, making it ready for trips in a way that many electric vehicles have not been.

How does it compare to the others on this list?  There’s a wow factor that is associated with the Mustang name. Ford built this SUV to look more like a sedan, and the styling works.  It’s speedy nature and upscale interior put a bow on it. On the other hand, it is smaller and will appeal more to singles and couples.  Small families will find enough space, but larger ones may need the CRV or RX.

Honda CRV Hybrid

PUCK, POLAND – September 18, 2018: Honda CR-V car parked in a field on a country road next to a wind farm

The CRV Hybrid was a no-brainer. This two-row SUV is a top seller in the midsize class, and Honda is a leader in hybrid technology. It was only logical to combine the two, and the results have been very well-received.  Predicted reliability scores are high.

The 212-horsepower unit includes two electric motors to assist a four-cylinder engine. Fuel economy is 38 mpg combined.  City driving nets 40 mpg while highway driving nets 35 mpg.

Unlike the Mustang Mach-E, these Honda SUVs charge the electric battery simply by driving.  Another plus for the CRV is its standard all-wheel drive.

With its ever-evolving hybrid technology, the CRV Hybrid can do what some other hybrids can’t. It has the ability to revert to electric power at 40-mph-plus cruising speeds.  This makes it smarter than many similar vehicles.  Like others in its class, it uses electric power to travel short distances.  Plus, the electric power is a boost at take-offs.

How does it compare to the others on the list?  The 33-cu.ft. boot is definitely an asset. The Ford Mustang has just under 30 cubic feet.  With its third row, the Lexus loses much of its standard cargo capacity for the extra seats. The CRV leads in passenger space as well with several more inches of second-row legroom.  In terms of value, it offers more driver assistance and features for its pricetag.  Speaking of price, an auto loan calculator can help you decide how much car you can afford.

Lexus RX L Three Row

A leader in its luxury midsize class, the Lexus RX figured out how to add a third row and go hybrid.  It’s no wonder that this new combination is rising on the charts. The L adds more length to the popular two-row hybrid at luxury car dealerships.

Like other models made by this brand, the RC Hybrid has good predicted reliability scores.  It has an extensive suite of safety features that promote better driving and reduce the chances of accidents in a number of key situations.  Of course, its ability to seat more than the standard 5 is an asset to many families who need more seats.

Lexus combines three electric motors with a 3.5-litre V6.  This boosts horsepower to 308 combined.  Like the CR-V, it has all-wheel drive.

How does it compare to the others on the list?  In addition to seating more people, the RX L Hybrid manages to be a step above the others due to its luxury liner status. It is also the only one on the list that can tow up to 3,500 pounds.  It is the least eco-friendly, although it has good gas mileage for its size and luxury class.

What’s Next

While all of those vehicles are actually plausible rides, you can look at Supercars to see what’s next.  This really shows where we are going with the drive away from petrol and diesel.

Based in Silicon Valley, you’d expect Drako Motors to come up with a remarkable ride. The Drako GTE maintains 900 kw of power due to its four motors.  This quadtrain is supplied by a continuous 1,800 amps from the 90-kwh battery.  The output is an incredible 1,200 horsepower. It has a top speed of 206 mph.

The first Japanese-engineered electric hypercar is the Owl. This remarkable vehicle, made with lots of carbon fiber to keep it light, has four electric motors.  Horsepower is an incredible 2012. As for the wattage, it is rated at 1480 kW.  The battery range is 450 kilometers.  The 0-60 mph sprint is a racecar-worthy 1.69 seconds.

Conclusion

The steady pace toward new technologies is providing the public with some remarkable hybrid and electric SUVs that are affordable and capable.  It’s definitely time to put away the old belief that electric power isn’t strong enough for our driving habits and embrace what’s possible.
