Today The Car Spotter will be discussing the news that James May has bought the final Ferrari 458 Speciale, something that may seem strange to many considering he has not gone ahead with his Top Gear contract renewal meaning he is technically unemployed.
The opportunity to buy the limited edition Ferrari 458 Speciale presented itself way before the recent “fracas” and despite initially wanting to order the new 488 GTB, May decided the 458 Speciale was the car for him as he has driven and loved the car and it will be the last normally aspirated mid-engined V8 from Ferrari, making it a car he loved an a historic model.
Apparently his first attempt to order a Ferrari 458 Speciale did not go as planned because each of the 458 Speciale’s had been ordered and purchased but James May was able to pull a few strings and Ferrari agreed to produce one additional model just for him. Lucky for him.
Ex Top Gear presenter James May had chosen the Speciale to be configured in dark blue with golden wheels and the unique Speciale racing stripes before comically quoting,
“Hang on a minute. Unemployed middle-aged man from Hammersmith orders the last-ever Ferrari 458 Speciale, in dark blue. What on earth was I thinking of? Just moments before I signed the order form and committed myself totally and irreversibly, I had a sudden change of heart. I ordered it in bright orange.”

The Ferrari 458 Speciale will have the last ever Ferrari 4.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine creating 605bhp making it the most powerful Ferrari 458 to date. The 0-60mph time is just 3 seconds.
I think changing the 458 Speciale from dark blue to orange was a good decision. The whole purpose of owning a supercar like a Ferrari is for it to be brash, hence why orange is a better colour choice in my opinion.
