Buying a car is an expensive business, so it makes sense to do everything you can to get the best possible deal. That’s why I’ve put together some top car buying tips to keep in mind before you hit the forecourt.

Do Your Homework

It’s going to be pretty hard to get the best deal if you don’t know what kind of car you’re looking for, what additional features you need and which vehicles are within budget. So, before you do anything else, sit down and work out exactly what it is you want from a car and research models that will fit the bill. The more knowledge you have, the better able you will be to negotiate a good price with the car salesman.

Consider Used

If you’re someone who has only ever considered buying brand new vehicles, you might want to rethink your position. Even cars that are just one year old will be significantly cheaper than the same model brand new due to the huge depreciation costs of new cars. That means you could get a car that’s as good as new for thousands of pounds less (on average cars that are 12 months old will be £3,750 lower) and that is going to be the best deal. Just make sure you buy from a reputable dealer like Carlton Car Centre, and research recommended prices before you buy. If everything is in order, a used car could be great for you.

Remain Alert

Despite the stereotype, there are lots of lovely car salesmen out there, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be on your guard. Car salesmen want to get the best deals for themselves, quite understandably, and that means that their first, second and third prices might not be the best. If you don’t let your guard down too much, stay calm and focus on your own objectives, you’re far more likely to get a good deal than you would otherwise.

Be Prepared to Walk Away

If you’re prepared to walk away for a deal, chances are negotiations will go in your favour. Car salesman don’t want to lose a deal and if you stand firm, there is a good chance they will lower the price further, or at least throw in some extras. You have to be convincing though.

Test Drive

Whether you’re buying a new or used car, you should always give it the once over and take it for a test drive because cars can always develop faults and they are usually not obvious to spot just by looking.

Finance Can Be Cheaper

A lot of people think that buying a car outright, if they have the means to do so, will always be the better option, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, dealers offer finance packages that lower the cost of the vehicle and extras overall, so that even when interest is taken into account, finance comes out on top. So, don’t be too quick to rule it out.

I hope you get a great deal on your next vehicle!
