It used to be the case that if you wanted to sell your car then you would either take it to a car dealer or you would sell it privately, probably taking out an ad in a magazine or your local paper or putting up a flyer in your local shop window. Thanks to the influx of technology, these are no longer your only choices as the digital age has seen the arrival of eBay and other online companies who can help you to sell your car to just about anyone.

Before you do anything, though, it is essential to find out how much your car is worth. Again, thanks to advancements in technology there are a number of ways you can do this online, take a look on Emerald House Of Cars for a quick an easy way or simply type in ‘how much is my car worth?’ on Google and you’ll find a number of different sites which can tell you. Try a few to compare and get the best price.

When you know how much your car is worth, then you can have a look at the options for selling it:

Use A Dealer

Even with all the other options, going to a dealer is still the quickest and easiest way to sell your car. If you’re looking to replace it with a new car then a dealer may offer a good price for your old car. However, if you negotiate a good discount on your new car, the dealer may be reluctant to give you the best price for the one you are selling. Try to haggle a good price for a new car before you start discussing a possible trade-in because this will help you make sure you’re getting the best deal on both counts.

Private sale

You will usually get more for your car by selling it privately. However, it can be a time-consuming process, and you will need to be available to take phone calls and meet buyers for inspections and test drives.

Online auction

Using an online auction is a quick and easy way of doing things, but it is also potentially the riskiest way to sell your car. To be safe, you’ll need to set a fixed price to go to auction, so you at least get the minimum you’re looking for, this is why it’s really important to know the value of the car.

Online Buying Companies

You can sell your car to a professional online buyer as a quick and easy alternative to selling privately or to a dealer. However, you might not get the best price doing it this way, but you will save yourself a lot of hassle. However, if your car has high mileage, is in less-than-perfect condition or is simply getting on a bit, you may struggle to find private buyers or dealers who are interested whereas online buyers tend to be less judgmental and just value the car as they see fit.
